Pros and Cons of Eating Red Meat

Red Meat is also known as Dark Meat, a category that includes meats that are dark before cooking. It can come from mammals such as beef, pork, lamb and goat, as well as game meats such as duck, bison and venison. In nutritional science, red meat is defined as any meat that has more myoglobin than white meat. However,  white meat being defined as non-dark meat from chicken or fish.

More than 70 pounds of red meat are eaten by the average American each year. It is the centerpiece of American dishes as well as people from all over the world loved to eat it anytime. People prefer to take it with breakfast, lunch and dinner also, as it contains large amounts of iron, minerals (zinc and phosphorus) and vitamin B. It is essential for your overall body health, despite being associated with high level of cholesterol and other health problems. Apart from its health benefits, there are some disadvantages of eating red meat.

Pros of Eating Red Meat

Red meat contains high level vitamin B-12 and vitamin D in order to improve body functionality. It is a good source of both vitamins that our body needs. Vitamin B-12 is the most complex form of vitamin, that is required for the formation of red blood cells and building of DNA. These vitamins are also essential for increasing the functioning of the circulatory and nervous system.

It contains zinc which is an important mineral that help in the development of bone tissues, division, regeneration of tissues, and brain health. It is also plays an important role in sexual hormone secretion.

Magnesium is the other important mineral that red meat consists. The high level magnesium ensures proper functioning of the cardiovascular system, brain, kidneys, liver and enhances bone strength.

Red meat assists in the absorption of calcium in the body, as it is a good source of calcium and protein. Calcium is also essential for the growth and maintenance of teeth and bones.

Red meat contains high quantity of iron that ensures the proper transportation of oxygen to the cells. It helps in the formation of hemoglobin and effective functioning of the muscles.

Cons of Eating Red Meat

Red meat can increase the risk of cancer in the human body. It contains high fat that contributes to the occurrence of estrogen and progesterone sensitive breast cancer.

With the high consumption of red meat, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes can increase. Processed meat contains preservatives that affect the cell in the pancreases responsible for the production of insulin.

A person who eats red meat on a daily basis or in a large quantity, have more chances of having Cardiovascular complications such as stroke and heart disease.

The fats and cholesterol include in red meat, can lead to accumulation of a fatty substance called plaque to your artery walls. The condition increases your risk of developing a heart attack.
